Nature has been solving the challenge of trust for billions of years. Taking a full-perspective view of trust in the natural world, the Bio360: Nature of Trust examines trust-based interactions across species and ecosystems to uncover adaptive strategies shaped by 3.8 billion years of evolutionary intelligence. These guiding principles can inform human relationships, organizations, and social structures, supporting resilient, adaptive, and long-term cooperation. The short video traces the research journey that uncovered shared trust patterns across species and translated them into the Nature of Trust framework.

Our Approach

The Bio360 process combined human and biological insights in a structured way:

  • Listening and Theme Identification: Conducted sessions with leaders and practitioners to surface human questions and challenges around trust.

  • Biological Research: Reviewed over 200 species and systems to identify patterns of trust.

  • Pattern Synthesis: Extracted deep patterns and guiding principles that recurred across species.

  • Translation for Human Application: Refined insights into the Bio360 Report and the Nature of Trust Toolkit; a framework and tools for use in organizations, networks, and communities.

The report was led by Biomimicry 3.8 (B3.8), with significant contributions from Biomimicry for Social Innovation (BSI) and the project Cohort members. While B3.8 conducted the biological research and pattern recognition, BSI and the Cohort further helped shape the framework, language, accessibility, and real-world applications, ensuring the findings reflect both scientific insight and social innovation expertise.
